Chad Matthews has worked with hunting dogs for over 10 years. He was mentored by some of the best trainers in the industry. Chad has proven himself in the NSTRA community and is a certified judge.
Chad has been fortunate to have worked with many different pointing breeds as a trainer. He understands that each dog is unique and requires it’s own approach to training. Chad was a Law Enforcement K-9 handler and brings that knowledge to the bird dog arena. Chad had come to understand the psychology of dogs and strives to learn more about canines.
Chad proudly served in the United States Naval Reserve and is a retired Sergeant from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.

Working with Ranger
Working with Zeke on remaining steady on his finds.
A one day evaluation of your dogs natural abilities to find birds, pointing and retrieving. The dog will be handled primarily by our trainer.
Includes 10 quail.
A one on one session with your dog and our trainer. Our trainer will also provide feedback to help the hunter be a better partner for the dog. An affordable solution to tune up your pup before the season or just to get them out in the field.

Your dog will be housed in our kennels for two weeks. They will undergo extensive evaluations and have contact with many birds. If at any point during this evaluation we believe that the dog is not performing at the appropriate level, you will be notified and the decision to continue or terminate training will be made.
Your dog will be housed at our kennel. They will get daily training sessions and exercise.
The time at our facility is dependent on the dogs ability and what the client desires from their dog.
Kennel fee is $500 per month. Cost of birds(quail) depends on the industry cost at the time of training. The amount of birds your dog gets is dependent on the needs of your dog.
NSTRA standards of competition
Our trainer will “gun” for you and your dog in a NSTRA field trial. After each brace, feedback will be given to improve you and your dogs performance.
Travel fees may also be applicable.

Your dog will be transported, handled and competed in a NSTRA field trial by our trainer.
Base cost is $200 per trial.

A minimum of one week in our facility prior to the trial is required. Kennel fees will be prorated to the amount of time your dog is at our facility and how many birds are needed to get your dog ready for the trial.

No, we only board dogs in our training program.
Prices vary based on the season and what our cost is to purchase the quail. Usually the price is between $10-12 per quail. We strive to keep our costs as reasonable as we can make them.
No. We are not going to be teaching your dog the classics like sit, stay, shake, etc.
We focus on your dog being steady on point and recalling to the handler.

No. We take the dogs instinctual skills and build them into refined hunting dogs. Not all dogs have the ability to be an upland game dog. If we evaluate your dog, you will get a no frills assessment of what we see in your dog.
Yes. We do utilize “E” collars or electric collars. The use of the E collar is only after the command has already been trained to the dogs. Even then it is never used to punish the dog and the intensity at the lowest level possible.
No. Blue Line Bird Dogs does not guide hunts. We are strictly a training facility. Our partner, Bar King Dog Horse Ranch does provide guiding services.

We train to the National Shoot To Retrieve (NSTRA) standards.
